Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic

This recruitment is to establish a hiring list for anticipated vacancies for Lateral Firefighter Paramedics. The Firefighter Paramedic is a full-time, non-exempt position. The hourly rate range for this position is $32.16 to $42.89, plus excellent benefits.

The staff for the City of DuPont and its Fire Department strive to serve our community through a shared dedication of excellence, respect for diversity, and a commitment to those we serve. The Fire Department works a 48/96-hour shift schedule, operating out of one centrally located fire station and providing emergency and non-emergency response to fire, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials, wildland incidents, citizen assists and many other types of calls. The department currently runs over 1000 calls per year, of which is about 70% medical.

The Firefighter's work includes responding to and dealing with emergency situations, natural conditions that pose a threat to life and property, and incidents of service to the citizens. Employees in this position are responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services, fire inspections activities, public education, and other like duties. This position performs a full range of emergency work under adverse and strenuous physical conditions. Firefighters have a high risk of exposure to hazardous conditions, toxic chemicals and infectious diseases encountered during firefighting or emergency medical incidents.

Firefighters perform duties in the following areas: emergency firefighting operations, technical rescue operations, hazardous materials operations, emergency medical operations, company level fire and life safety building inspections, other fire prevention programs which includes public education, minor maintenance of apparatus, equipment, and facilities, testing of fire hydrants, hose and ladders, and maintenance of quarters in accordance with Department Standard Operating Procedures. Firefighters are responsible to maintain their readiness and skill proficiency through education, training, and a focus on their wellness (psychological, physiological, and physical).

Work performance of this position will be evaluated by their respective Fire Captain for the quality of work, level of proficiency and knowledge of drills, equipment, and related responsibilities. The Firefighter is also evaluated for their ability to work as part of a team in the effective and timely achievement of department goals and objectives. Such evaluation will be based on their level of experience and rank relative to their status; probationary, third, second, and first class.

• Maintain a high level of moral, ethical, and legal behavior and attitude.

• May perform hazardous tasks for long periods of time in emergency conditions of high stress, strenuous physical exertion under such conditions as heights, cramped surroundings, extreme temperatures, smoky environments, and limited visibility.

• Remove persons from danger and administer emergency medical aid as required.

• Participate in fire drills and attend classes on firefighting, emergency medical services, disaster control, etc.

• Maintain skill level through ongoing training to prevent degradation of skills.

• Responsible to ensure all advanced life support equipment, medications and inventory is present, in good working order, response ready and accounted for.

• Receive emergency alarms; operate radio and other communications equipment under routine and emergency conditions.

• Perform and maintain physical conditioning in accordance with Departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and Labor Agreement.

• Drive or ride Fire Department apparatus to alarms, place equipment, lay and connect hoses and nozzles, raise, and climb ladders, use high pressure water hoses, chemical extinguishing agents and other tools and equipment as required.

• Ventilate burning structures; perform salvage operations and other related tasks.

• Complete and maintain paperwork, records, and forms as directed by Company Officer.

• Participate in the in-service company inspection program.

• Drive, operate and maintain Fire Department equipment and apparatus.

• Are responsible to be familiar with and adhere to Department Standard Operating Procedures.

• Perform minor maintenance and inspection of fire hydrants, apparatus, and equipment.

• Participate and assist with testing pumpers, hose, ladders, and extinguishers.

• Participate in public education.

• Perform maintenance of station.

• Maintain professional appearance as directed by Department Standard Operating Procedures.

• Perform other related work as assigned.

• High school Diploma, GED or equivalent

• Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's license and successfully complete the employer's Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) program prior to driving apparatus.

• Must possess and maintain a valid Paramedic certification with the Washington State Department of Health, and authorization from Pierce County EMS within 30 days of employment.

• Must maintain and possess a valid ACLS certification.

• Must have at least 8 hours of Pediatric Training equivalent to PALS (PALS Certification preferred).

• Must have at least 8 hours of Trauma Training equivalent to PHTLS (PHTLS Certification preferred).

• Must have at least one (1) year experience as a Paramedic in a 911 response system.

• Must be able to act/react calmly with a professional demeanor when faced with grotesque, traumatic injuries, or exceptionally emotional situations and conditions.

• Must possess an IFSAC or Pro-Board Firefighter I Certification (Firefighter 2 preferred). Or, as a/an:

• LATERAL - Be able to obtain reciprocity from the Washington State Fire Marshal's Office within 60 days of the hire date, Or,

• ENTRY LEVEL – The candidate will be sent through and must successfully complete an IFSAC Firefighter 1 academy.

• Modern methods, principles, techniques, and practices applied to firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials, fire inspections, disasters, and related fields.

• Thorough understanding of the principles and practices or emergency care from a basic level responder, up to and including that of a Paramedic.

• Hazardous materials: Recognition and Identification, at the Operations Level.

• Topography and street locations of the fire protection area. A general knowledge of basic building construction, hazards, built-in protective devices in buildings, including general control points, placement, and operation of public utilities.

• Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involving apparatus and equipment operation.

• Mechanical and operating principles involved in the operation and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment.

• Department Standard Operating Procedures

• Analyzing dangerous situations rapidly and accurately and taking reasonable course of action.

• Performing hose and ladder evolutions and apparatus operations.

• Performing physically demanding firefighting skills and duties including, but not limited to, carrying, and manipulating hose, ladders, and rescue equipment.

• Adequate knowledge of fire prevention codes and fire safety as it relates to the company level programs.

• Inspect and detect violations and hazards in dwellings and other buildings and to make proper recommendations for the correction of findings through company inspections.

• Deal with the public courteously and effectively.

• Maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers.

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Understand and execute specific orders or instructions.

• React quickly and calmly in a stressful and hazardous condition.

• Ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner, following all applicable safety guidelines. Work in real and potentially hazardous conditions to the extent of possible serious injury or loss of life.

• Recall facts and conditions observed while under severe physical and emotional stress.
