Job Title: Overhead Crane Operator

Job Description

The Overhead Crane Operator serves as the starting point for the production line, ensuring the shop remains supplied and that structural steel moves smoothly and safely throughout the facility. This role requires proficiency in operating a sit-down forklift and overhead crane to support continuous, efficient production in a steel manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Safely unload and load large structural steel beams from flatbed semi-trucks using an overhead crane.
  • Operate a sit-down forklift to move and stage steel materials throughout the facility.
  • Operate a metal saw to cut steel to precise lengths according to specifications.
  • Handle and band structural steel materials to prepare them for processing or shipment.
  • Use measuring tools, including measuring tape and ruler, to verify accurate dimensions of cut steel.
  • Support continuous material flow to keep the production line supplied and minimize downtime.
  • Perform basic quality checks on materials and cuts to ensure they meet required standards.
  • Follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Assist with loading and unloading trucks and moving steel between indoor and outdoor areas as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in operating an overhead crane for handling large structural steel beams.
  • Experience operating a sit-down forklift in a manufacturing or material handling environment.
  • Ability to operate a metal saw safely and accurately to cut steel to precise lengths.
  • Strong material handling skills, including loading, unloading, and staging steel products.
  • Ability to use a measuring tape and ruler to take accurate measurements.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with metal fabrication processes.
  • Capability to work on your feet for 10-hour shifts.
  • Reliability and attention to safety when working around heavy equipment and steel materials.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with banding steel or similar materials.
  • Background in steel manufacturing or metal fabrication environments.
  • Comfort working both indoors and outdoors in a production setting.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and production requirements.
  • Willingness to work overtime when needed, including occasional Fridays.

Work Environment

This role is based in a steel manufacturing facility where approximately 60% of the work takes place indoors and 40% outdoors, primarily while retrieving materials from trucks. The outdoor work area is covered by a roof, providing protection from direct exposure to the elements. Shifts typically run 10 hours from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with recent overtime on Fridays. The environment involves regular interaction with heavy steel materials, overhead cranes, forklifts, and metal saws, requiring adherence to safety procedures and appropriate work attire suitable for an industrial setting.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
