HVAC Mechanic

The University of Miami/UHealth department of Facilities has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time HVAC Mechanic to work at the UHealth Medical Campus. The HVAC Mechanic performs building and equipment maintenance and repair with a focus on corrective needs of HVAC systems in assigned facilities. The HVAC Mechanic ensures that systems are working properly and are in compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Maintains work areas and equipment rooms in a clean and safe condition at all times.

  • Receives and responds to requests for repair work.

  • Keeps daily logs of work, performed and pending, updated.

  • Cleans, maintains, and paints equipment and machinery to prevent deterioration.

  • Repairs plumbing and leaky equipment on roofs and ceilings.

  • Advises appropriate managing staff of risk factors and repair needs beyond the mechanic’s ability.

  • Prepares and maintains accurate records of equipment and facility preventative maintenance.

  • Tests and evaluates equipment performance using appropriate tools.

  • Inspects air conditioning and heating systems, and performs general maintenance of work systems.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

  • Performs preventive maintenance work as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintains work areas and equipment rooms in a clean and safe condition at all times.
  • Received requests for corrective repair work on a variety of buildings, equipment and system components; utilizes several trades’ skills in the performance of maintenance and repair work.
  • Repairs panels, partitions and other building structures; installs building parts and cuts, shapes and fasten materials such as wood, plastic, ceiling tile, fiberglass and drywall to make ready for installation; may erect or repair building frames.
  • Lubricates non-sealed bearings, replaces or cleans filters. Keeps daily logs on major components up to date. Cycles and tests emergency generators. Cleans and paints equipment. Unstop drains, checks boilers, and water treatment systems in addition to gas and sewer lines. Contacts the appropriate supervisor when the nature of the work is beyond the mechanic’s capability – then assists with the completion of the work as required.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as valves, traps, sewers and vents; bends, cuts, reams and threads pipe and opens holes in walls for pipes. Connects piping with fittings and adhesives; performs soldering as necessary; opens clogged drains; inspects piping for leaks both visually and using pressure gauges.
  • Repairs leaky equipment on roofs and ceilings; locates source of roof leaks; removes existing roof surfaces; lays roofing paper and applies coating and adhesives to seal the leaking and/or old area.
  • Routinely maintains and repairs circulator and sump pumps, refrigeration units, auxiliary diesel generators, fans, bearings, universal joints and similar mechanical equipment.
  • Conduct fire alarm test and smoke evacuations tests in conjunction with security Operate heating, cooling systems, pumps and other related equipment.
  • May perform other skilled maintenance activities including construction, welding, brazing, and soldering.
  • Inspect air conditioning and heating systems and perform general maintenance work of systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
