Job Title: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist
Department: Environmental Health and Safety
Reports to: Vice President of Biogas
Pay Range: $70,000 - $90,000/annual
Position Overview:
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist supports safe and compliant field operations across Aemetis Biogas LLC sites. This field-based role administers safety programs, coordinates employee and contractor training, conducts inspections, manages corrective actions, supports incident response, and assists with environmental compliance and applicable reporting activities. The position requires regular travel between dairy biogas sites, independent task management, and sound judgment in active industrial and agricultural environments.
Essential Responsibilities
· Administer site safety programs, including training, orientations, records, inspections, incident documentation, corrective actions, hazard communication, PPE, heat illness prevention, emergency action planning, confined space, hot work, lockout/tagout, and incident investigation.
· Conduct routine field inspections for site safety, housekeeping, vehicles, equipment, signage, PPE, emergency equipment, contractor work activity, and environmental compliance observations.
· Document findings clearly; assign, track, and follow up on corrective actions until closure.
· Monitor field work for safe practices during maintenance, construction, non-routine work, and other high-risk activities; stop or escalate unsafe work when immediate correction is required.
· Coordinate contractor and new employee safety onboarding, site-specific orientations, safety documentation, job hazard analyses, and safe work permitting for hot work, confined space, lockout/tagout, excavation, and similar activities.
· Support OSHA, Cal/OSHA environmental compliance, and company EHS programs through documentation, inspection readiness, audit support, and corrective action management.
· Support environmental compliance activities, including field inspections, permit-related documentation, compliance monitoring, spill reporting, investigations, corrective action management, and coordination with the Environmental Compliance team.
· Support process safety-related activities, including Process Hazard Analysis coordination, Management of Change documentation, covered-process training, and corrective action tracking where applicable.
· Maintain and update emergency planning materials, spill response readiness, and emergency contacts; support incident reporting, fact gathering, root cause analysis, corrective action management, and post-incident communication.
· Review Standard Operating Procedures for safety alignment and field practicality; coordinate updates with Operations leadership where gaps are identified.
· Work with Operations, Construction, Environmental Compliance, and the Aemetis Advanced Fuels Keyes safety team to promote consistent EHS standards across all sites.
Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree, technical training, or safety-related coursework preferred.
· Minimum of 3–5 years of EHS experience in industrial, renewable energy, biogas, wastewater, construction, manufacturing, agricultural, or related operating environments preferred.
· Experience supporting multi-site field operations, contractor safety, environmental compliance activities, field inspections, incident investigation, and corrective action management preferred.
· Working knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA, common industrial safety programs, environmental permits, compliance inspections, corrective action programs, and environmental incident reporting preferred.
· Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills; able to identify unsafe conditions, maintain records, manage priorities, follow through on corrective actions, and escalate issues appropriately.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 required.
· First Aid/CPR certification required or ability to obtain after hire; OSHA 10-Hour required; OSHA 30-Hour, CSP, ASP, CHST, or similar credential preferred.
· Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required; regular travel between Aemetis Biogas LLC sites required.
Working Conditions
· Field-based role requiring regular work at dairy biogas, digester, pipeline, compressor, and related industrial operating sites.
· Exposure may include outdoor weather, uneven walking surfaces, agricultural environments, odors, noise, rotating equipment, pressurized systems, vehicle traffic, confined spaces, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other biogas-related hazards.
· Must be able to wear required PPE, walk active sites, climb stairs and ladders, inspect equipment, participate in emergency drills, and support emergency response activities when necessary.
