Cast Technician

The Cast Technician is responsible for assisting in orthopedic care in the cast room for patients requiring immobilization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the physician in procedures including the application of plaster and fiberglass casts; instructs patients in cast care, including danger signs.
  • Applies casts, removes casts, and allays patients' fears regarding cast removal.
  • Understands and practices aseptic technique; sets up and assists with minor surgical procedures.
  • Performs sterile prep on limb or part as necessary for special procedures, (i.e., joint aspirations, arthrogram x-ray studies, etc.) Assists in the preparation of blocks and assists in the reduction of fractures.
  • Removes sutures and applies dressings.
  • Fits custom bracing.
  • Teaches patient proper methods for a crutch, cane, and walker ambulation.
  • Instructs patient and assists them in the performance of specific exercises as directed by the orthopedic surgeon.
  • Maintains inventory of orthopedic supplies and reorders, as necessary.
  • Ensures the timely and accurate procurement of supplies, services, and equipment for the cast area.
  • Assists in helping other clinic staff when there is available time (histories, scheduling procedures, stocking rooms etc.).
  • Covers as backup to purchasing staff (i.e. when purchasing is absent) with receiving, inspecting, and verifying incoming supplies and equipment with corresponding purchase orders.
  • Prices and stocks incoming supplies on shelf.
  • Responsible to adequately use the time clock and notify the supervisor if additional information is needed for pay sheet.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an Orthopedic Technician program; equivalent on-the-job training and experience working in this field may be substituted for a college degree.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all types of orthopedic surgery and state of the art of cast management including all types of current forms of immobilization from plaster cast technique to the latest types of plastic and fiberglass casting, bracing and orthosis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of musculoskeletal system, anatomy and physiology as related to fractures, fracture care and various anomalies. Understands orthopedic disease processes and their effect on the musculoskeletal system.
  • Core competencies in communication, interpersonal skills, teamwork, ethics, and confidentiality.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and willing to travel to multiple locations.

Physical Requirements

  • The work environment is the typical medical office environment. The employee must be able to complete their work satisfactorily in an environment where there are significant distractions, including staff, patients, and vendors walking through and conversing, telephones ringing, conversations carrying over, loud noises, and interruptions to answer questions from others.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls up to 8 hours per day. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear up to 8 hours per day. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl up to 8 hours a day.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and should do so in a sound and safe manner. The employee will regularly assist patients in turning; will frequently assist patient in arising from exam table; will frequently push wheelchair patients; and frequently assists patients in arising from and returning to wheelchair or bed.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
